Post subject: Elbert Lowder's Death
Elbert Lowder passed away 2:30AM this Thursday morning, December 14, 2006 at
Liberty Commons, Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 310 Commerce Drive, Sanford,
NC. He had been transferred there just a few day ago from Central Carolina
Hospital in Sanford. Funeral Arrangements to be announced.

This is a great loss for checkers fraternity and we
never fill this gap. I am proud I had a chance in my life to meet, play with him
and learn from him.

Post subject: The passing of Mr. Elbert Lowder
Hello everyone:
The
ACF and Checkers has lost a
true Icon of our game. I just now got off the phone with Mr. Lowder's business
partner and long time friend Mr. Tim Laverty. Mr. Lowder had no life insurance,
etc. and Tim could use some help for Mr. Lowder's funeral expenses. I told Tim
when we had finished talking that I would go onto our forum and make a posting
asking if anyone was so inclined to make a donation to contact Tim. I show his
address below.

May the gap that he
leaves here be a worthy gain for the line of the greatest players of eternity.
I am personally sad
that I never met this player which original and creative games stand for
themselves as a worthy lifetime achievement.

sad occasion, indeed. Elbert was one of the characters of the game.
I met him during the 3rd GB V
USA
match, in Bournemouth in 1973 and later in Dublin in 1979 during his match v
Derek Oldbury.

thoughts and prayers are with Elbert's family and close friends. I met Elbert in
1973 during the international match at Bournemouth, England, and several times
over the next twenty years. He will be sorely missed.

Just to set the record straight, Elbert was at Liberty Commons Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center located at 310 Commerce Drive off of Hwy. 87
in the southern part of
Sanford. The time of his death was 2:30 AM on Dec. 14, 2006.
Memorial Service for Elbert will not be until January. The
last
time that I saw Elbert was about 12 hours prior to his death, and I knew when I
saw him then that he was not going to be around very long.

want to express my sympathy. I never meet him but yet I did enjoy his aggressive
and unusual style of play. He will live on in the hearts of the players and as
well in the various books and publications he is a part of.

Post subject: Lowder's Great Style
When I first started studying the game of checkers I noticed that Mr. Lowder
played an unusual style of checkers. I liked this idea and so I copied it. I
have told many that he is the reason I like to play so many odd lines. He was a
true Grandmaster and an awesome innovator. I will miss him and I am proud to
have played him. I am also proud to say I continue to try and play more like him
every day.

met him once, in Sanford at the first tournament I ever played in. The year was
1975 or so. I never played him, but since that tournament I have gone over many
of his games. I too am saddened by his death. It is a great loss for the game.

I am Elbert's niece. Uncle Elbert had a lot of nieces and nephews and we were
proud of him. I received a link to your site from my cousin and was amazed at
the notes posted on how much he was admired and is missed. I would like you to
post the following to your site, which brought me great comfort, to let your
members know how much this meant to us as Uncle Elbert's family.
Thank you for your kind words about our Uncle Elbert. We grew up watching him
play checkers and have many fond memories of his playing. He was our Uncle, so
it was hard for us to realize how important he was to the game, as he would sit
and play children's checkers with us , letting us win ! Thank you for letting us
know what he meant to each of you and the game he loved. We will miss him.

For the upcoming Jim Loy book about
Elbert Lowder I had done
research of all my games I played against Elbert since 1997 GA State (June 6-8 )
in Calhoun until 2005 NC State in Greensboro (May 12-14).
We played in two World Championships in 2002 - 3 moves and 11 man ballot, 4
National - 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 16 State events.
This generated in total 135 games.
Overall score with matches: 41-17-77
Score w/o matches: 23-11-52
Elbert was very active at the end of 1990's - beginning 2000's and we met many
times. In the past 4 years there were only few games beside National 2004.

No ! Ron King is close, but not quite ! I lost him 2 games in
1996 Nat'l (my 2nd ty).
Other 8 losses came from matches: 3 in GAYP WCM 2000 (drawn match 3-3-18 ), 2
losses from 2003 3-move WCM (I won 8-2-25), and 3 losses in 2005 3-move WCM (I
won 8-3-25). Obviously Lowder is ahead with number of winning games
His style generated more winning chances for both sides.
In other hands - Ron King didn't lose as many ... so far.

I first met Elbert in 1956 at Bethlehem,
Pa. Nat.Ty.. Always remember him with the chew tobacco and spittoon in his early
days. He was a gentlemen, a good sport--he never used any underhanded means. We
were tough competitors, but still friends. Elbert never won The 3-Move NT, but
in 1992 at Hot Springs, Ark. all he needed was a draw heat w/Ron King in 8th Rd.
It was 3 on 3 position, 2 singles and a king a piece. Elbert said agreed draw,
Ron lets play. Position was a draw. They proceeded and Ron sprung a trap and
Lowder lost. He (Lowder) smashed all the checkers off the table. I was playing
Cravens in next room, but Herschell Smith came in to tell us about it, That was

He had eleven brothers and sisters. The only two remaining are my mother,
Ramelle (Lowder) McDonald, age 83, and Louise (Lowder) Cranford, age 80. They
would like to invite the checker community to a memorial service for Elbert on
Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at First Street United Methodist Church
in Albemarle, North Carolina. Elbert was a life long member of this church. We
hope that some of you can make it to the service, it would mean a lot to his
sisters. I would also like to join my cousin Sandy in thanking
everyone for all their thoughts and prayers for the family in the loss of our
Uncle Elbert. He was truly a special person and we were all very proud of him.

concerning Elbert Lowder. He is on 3rd floor, ICU at Central Carolina Hospital
in Sanford. He was hospitalized Sunday, October 29, 2006 by a hear attack. His
condition is serious. Our Love, and Prayers are with Elbert for his recovery and
restoration. NCCA sent a vase of cut flowers and card. Tim Laverty his business

Dear Checker Fraternity,
I just wanted to inform you that the actual timing of the initial onset of the
myocardial infarction that Elbert Lowder experienced
probably occurred on Thursday Oct. 26. He was complaining then that he could not
get his blood sugar down and that he felt like he needed to
throw up. He threw up and said that he felt better after that. He is right near
the top of the chart concerning the seriousness of the attack.
Elbert had congestive heart failure today, Nov.2, 2006. Of course this was an
added setback to his recovery. I will try to keep you updated
as to Elbert's progress or failure as the information becomes available.

I have been working on a book of Elbert
Lowder's greatest games for over a year now. It will take a while longer, maybe
another year, as I have to study about 2000 games in some detail just to decide
which ones are brilliant and which ones were played by an impostor (just kidding
there). I've got 59 games chosen and briefly annotated, so far. I will annotate
them in greater detail later. I thought you folks might enjoy seeing one of

seeing Elbert when I go to the National ty. I first met him in 1968 in Medora,
ND at the first National tournament that I ever attended. He was a great
Checker player and the game will never be the same without Elbert Lowder.

Read a lot about Mr. Lowder and the many checkers
matches that he participated. If I am not mistaken, he once held the world
championship or was it he played for the championship on several occasion?
Anyway, he was one of the stronger more noted players of the game. On an
occasion, I talked to him by telephone many years ago about traveling to
Sanford to play a game of "Pool Checkers" in hope of learning. While talking
to him, we discussed playing on the internet and the ability of his business
partner, Tim Laverty. Once, I traveled to Danville, Va. where I met Tim in
person. Also, while I was there I watch him play a few games. If you talk to
any of Mr. Lowder's family please extend my condolences. BTW, "Shotgun" is the nickname that I chose for
VOG and I continue using it in the checkers arena. :):)
